Storytellers 18: See Through Our Eyes

Location: Traveling
DeLand Teens Give Us Insight Into Their Changing World
All are invited to see DeLand’s historic African American community through the eyes of its current resident teens in this unique documentary photography exhibition.

The students were mentored and instructed in visual and narrative storytellingusing traditional film-based photography by Peter Schreyer, documentary photographer and Crealdé CEO. Students embarked on walking field trips in their DeLand neighborhood, and travelled to Crealdé in Winter Park, where they learned how to process film and turn negatives into exhibition-quality photographs in the darkroom. The teens also visited Hannibal Square Heritage Center, where they learned about the educational power of collecting oral histories and photographs within their own community.
Storytellers 18 is funded through is funded through a private gift from a Crealdé member and a grant from the English-Speaking Union of Central Florida.
Crealdé’s “Storytellers” projects have been providing Central Florida teenagers free-of-charge mentorship, photography instruction, and the opportunity for self-expression while exploring the heritage of their community since 1996.
